Technology is a marvel but when used morally. Technology has beneficial impacts in everyday life. Yet, misuse of technology is devastating. Controlling technology and using for only the benefits of mankind is required and that is moral.
Technology is used in the form of drones. There are people like David Attenborough and his team who use drones to shoot photographs and videos of wildlife in their natural habitat. While there are powerful armies in the world that choose to use drones in warfare. Both parties are using technologies – one for bringing creative information of the world. Other is simply targeting the enemies and destroying civilisation.
Technologies used in computers are for various business processes namely trading stocks and shares, e-commerce business like dot com Companies. Technology has helped in a cashless society where a bank computer stores e-funds over the web. There are lot of technological freedom that should go be accompanied with responsibilities.
The future technology was in imaginative phase for a long time. People discover robots appearing in science fiction written by Isaac Asimov. His well-known set of laws is known as Isaac Asimov’s “Three Laws of Robotics”. These were introduced in his 1942 short story “Runaround” that were mentioned in earlier stories. The Three Laws are:
- A robot may not injure a human being. Even through inaction allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings unless such orders are given that are conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence. This is as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
Near the end of his book Foundation and Earth, a zeroth law was introduced:
- A robot must never injure humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
These laws are the best known set of robot laws that were written by Isaac Asimov in the 1940s. Based on these laws, there have been other sets of laws proposed by researchers in the decades since then.
Robots are the new trend in technology. However, there are many legal issues that have to be sorted out. As mentioned above, Laws of Robotics are a set of rules that have to be used to check the behaviour of robots so they cause no harm to others or themselves. Robots are designed to have a degree of autonomy but complexity do not yet exist. Robots are widely anticipated in science fiction, films. They are the hottest topic of active research and development in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.
There has been comprehensive terminological codification for legal assessment. This is applicable even to the technological developments in the robotics industry. At present, majority of the Asian countries are busy with the technology progress. There are representative of the contemporary reinterpretation of the law (and ethics) in the field of robotics. There is requirement for rethinking of traditional legal constellations that includes both civil and criminal law.
